What Pose Transitions Teach Us

Transitions — the moments spent moving from pose to pose— might seem insignificant, or even more challenging than the poses. They require a high level of awareness, focus and patience. As our weight shifts, our balance and focus gets tested. Our mind may race to the next pose instead of staying in the moment. However, transitions are chalk full of valuable lessons for our life — on and off the mat!

Here are 3 things transitions teach us:

To slow down. Because transitions can feel uncomfortable, we tend to rush through them without awareness and control. It’s easy to just think about the next big pose! But, rushing through transitions is like rushing through every daily life just waiting for the BIG moments to happen. Before you know it, years have passed by. Cultivate awareness by slowing down— physically and mentally.

To get acquainted with uncertainty. Transitions ask us to apply coordination and fluidity to our movement. This may feel uneasy or challenging at times. Becoming acquainted with moments of uncertainty can strengthen our ability to let life flow — without the need to micromanage, interfere or resist.

To appreciate the small moments. Transitions aren’t always pretty (just like a lot of moments in life). However, these smaller, mundane moments often reveal more about us than the big moments. With awareness and the space to reflect, growth and gratitude can bloom—and that’s where the magic happens.
