Stress That Strengthens: How a Rigorous Practice Benefits You

Did you know there is such a thing as “good” stress?

“Good” stress is intentional and comes in controlled doses as a way to condition yourself or adapt. (Think things like: cold plunging, HIIT training, intermittent fasting… and hot yoga) This type of stress is scientifically proven to make you mentally and physically more capable of handling “bad” stress— the type thats unexpected, chronic or unmanageable. In science, it’s a fancy word called “hormesis.”

The practice we do here at PPY is all about observing how stress and tension affects you and learning how to adapt to it so that when you walk out into the world, you are better equipped for whatever comes your way. (Cue: car accident, break-up, illness, work deadlines)

The heat and humidity poke your stress response. The physical poses prod your nervous system. The overall sensations and experience can be uncomfortable at times. By integrating the pieces of mindfulness and group breath, you are able to remain present to the experience and in control of your mind and body. The rigor is the catalyst for change.

There are numerous physical benefits that can be gleaned from our practice: stronger, leaner muscles, a cleansing detox, improved range of motion and an immunity boost to name a few. But that’s just scratching the surface when we begin to see the mental and psychological benefits that can occur in and out of the studio:

-Heightened body awareness
-Improved self confidence + mindset
-More patience + impulse control
-Mental presence + daily focus
-Emotional acceptance + resilience

This practice is a glimpse into the sheer magnitude of what you are capable of. This practice is a reminder of your well-earned resilience and strength. This practice is a mirror for your life: a reflection of who you are and a powerful nudge towards never ending growth.

This practice has the power to change your life.
